try this:
imagej (type "imagej nih" on google...)
it is intended for molecular biology, microscopy, but you can find a lot of stuff for everyone. what's incredible is the size of the program, and the speed.

it works on every platform...(JAVA)
this is what the open source community makes for biologists... awesome.

(if you are a biologist try quantifying a band with this, it's easy as sleeping!!)

ImageJ is pretty slick, it has a ton of features, especially for science. I didn't know it existed at first - I was using NIH image in classic mode or booting into OS 9 to do my BS thesis.
