Preface: I have done a few searches on MRoogle before posting this and thought the thread could use an update.

Most threads are for SSD and I can't spend $500 on a new hard drive so this is for those of us who still rely on HDD technology.

I am interested in self-installing a 500 GB @ 7200 and converting the stock hard drive to an external with a kit. I was wondering what brand drive people have good experience with, especially one that works very well with a new MBP. Obviously I am looking for 16 MB Cache but beyond that is there much more I should look for?

I've been using a WD 500gig Scorpio Blue 5400 rpm drive for about a year and a half now in a MBP SR 2.2-- absolutely reliable and quiet. But... I'm beginning to run out of room on it and really wish they'd come out with a 1T drive I could swap out with.

But, if you're looking for a good 500g drive, I recommend the WD highly.
