Apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place....but I am looking for a 2.5" SSD to be used in my 2012 Unibody MacBook Pro running Mac OS Mountain Lion. TRIM will not be enabled.
The drive will see 1 - 1.5 TB of write data per week. At the end of the week the data is offloaded, and the process starts again.
My first thought was to go with something like a 2TB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro, since I thought they used SandForce controllers, which are supposed to be reasonably good with garbage collection without TRIM. When I went over to their website though, I found that OWC has recently switched to a Phison controller. This combined with the fact that OWC is quite a bit more expensive than the competition, has me wondering if there might be a better option.
Normally, I use a 7200 RPM HDD. This has always worked fine for my needs, however, after my last drive failure I went looking for a replacement and found that no one sells a 2.5" 7200 RPM 1TB HDD with conventional magnetic recording anymore. I did try a WD Black 1 TB SMR drive, but it just dragged to a crawl under my I/O workload. So I guess my options are to 1) track down an old 2.5" CMR HDD manufactured 4 - 5 years ago or 2) find a new SSD that will hold up to my weekly I/O without TRIM.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thank you!
