Buying a Laptop for somebodies Xmas present and their only remit is in the fact that it can run Wow.

Will this do the job - 13inch £999 MacBook Pro.

2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB L3 cache.

4GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory

Intel HD Graphics 4000 (all 13- and 15-inch configurations)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching.

Any 15" MacBook Pro from 2010 and later will run WoW just fine.

If they're an avid gamer I'd opt for a Windows box personally. Less $ will buy the same amount of power

Depends on how you understand "just fine". Integrated graphics don't really provide a good gaming experience IMO - even in a MBP. And the WoW engine can easily max out better graphic solutions (such as the GT650m in the current MBP lines).

Last time I checked 15" MBP since 2010 include dedicated GPUs. Sure, the 330M in the 2010 model is slower than even the current Intel's iGPU, but its still more than enough to play WoW on low/medium settings 1440x900 (15" native resolution).

As far as 650M performance in WoW goes, here are some MoP beta benchmarks by tomshardware. The 640 GT, which is roughly equivalent to the 650M gets around 30 fps at full HP/high settings/AA on. At 15" native 1440x900 and high settings, no AA you are probably looking at 45+ fps or even more. Certainly, a demanding player won't find this satisfactory, but let's be honest here - a demanding player won't be looking to purchase a Mac laptop to play games ;)

That said, my retina MBP happily runs Borderlands 2 and Guild Wars 2 at 1920x1200 high settings and Dishonored at 1680x1050 high settings.

my 13 incher (2012, i7, with intel 4000) runs wow just fine, I set it at max 48FPS and it stays there almost all the time (unless the place is really crowded). gets really hot tough, the fan goes all the way to 6200.

cheers

If you want High to Ultra settings, get a 2011 15" MBP or later.
