It appears that Microcenter has excellent specials. It was 200 off a macbook for several months. Now it's 200 off the basic 13" Macbook pro. So iow, 999.00. I've not seen as good a deal. Any other leads out there for best mac pricing?

You should check the model numbers. A lot of the time when MicroCenter has a deal like that it's on older versions of the computers.

Depending on if you're going to have to pay tax, Amazon offers a smaller discount, but no tax in most states.

In this case though, the model that Microcenter is advertising is the current base model 13" MBP. It's a good deal if you are not interested/eligible in getting the free (after rebate) ipod touch through the apple store. After tax, it would be comparable to the cost of buying it through Amazon, because Amazon does not charge taxes...but that opens up a whole other debate.

Its a good deal.
