While we would all like to get our hands on a nice expensive Mac, some of us just can't sum up the cash.
Give your advice on the best Mac for around $1,000.
New or refurbished.

You could get a tricked out Mac mini, a MacBook, or either a used MacBook Pro or iMac. Just look on eBay or Craigslist, and you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Give me your opinion
Which is better in terms of computing power, not portability
2.53ghz mac mini or 2.2ghz macbook pro

Go For the New, It Feels Better

$999 Macbook or $1199 13" MBP. Nothing wrong with a reliable refurbished Mac, but if you're set on spending around $1000, enjoy that fresh new Mac smell as you take it out of the box. These are great machines.

If you have one near you, Microcenter has the white Macbook for $799, no rebates. Get that and a 4GB memory stick (around $200) for a total of 5GB. (Or save $100 and get a 2x2GB kit...)

-OR-

Get a refurbished iMac. If you look, you'll see them all the time for $999 - lately its been the new base 21.5" model.

The iMac is FAR more powerful, but the Macbook is portable. Your call there.

As everyone has always said, I' go for a refurbished iMac or Macbook/Pro.

The new 21.5" base iMac always pops up very regularly for $999, and it's 3.06Ghz C2D, so it's much faster than those Macbooks you can get hold of for the price.
You'll get 4GB RAM as standard too, so no upgrading.

The iMac is far more powerful, and if you don't care about portability, it's the way to go :)

The Microcenter deal is a mail in rebate, they mail you a $200 prepaid visa gift card. - I am wrong*.

I think a refurbished 21" iMac is the best deal you can get at $999... I would be looking into that... if you want portability get the entry macbook and you will be fine... just add ram later on when you have some cash or a good deal presents itself.

*EDIT: I just checked microcenters site and I was wrong... they changed the offer from last month when it was a mail in rebate, now it really is instant and you can go pick up (in store only) a macbook for $799... that is the best deal ive seen on a new mac.

I am wrong*.

Takes a confident person to admit it, lol. I didn't believe it either when I saw it on another post - but $200 off instantly is insane-ly good on a brand new Macbook. Geez, I though I got a deal when I bought my wife's previous gen., open box return Macbook for $765 a little over a year ago. Now you can get the current model, BRAND NEW for $799... that's a great deal, if you MC nearby (can't ship it - in store only).

~$849 macbook at the refurb site...they are there every couple of days...or $799 if a microcenter is near you...its store pick up only.

or $999 refurb desktop that someone mentioned looks like a good deal

I picked up a 2007 dual 2.66 GHz Mac Pro on craigslist a few weeks back for $1,000. Keep your eyes peeled, I would have kept it if I wasn't in the market for something a more recent (sold for $1,700 later that week)
