Best MacBook External Display For Text 27" +

I need to buy a new MacBook and will be using it primarily with an external display

I have not yet decided between the Air or the Pro

What currently available 27" or larger display is going to be best for text, and hopefully at a $500ish price point?

And will the Air or the Pro display text any differently on an external monitor?

I am of the opinion that the 24 inch at 1920 x 1080 (native), but of good quality (hood and colour accurate) is the best option for concentrated text work and photographic work that I do. For many other things a bigger screen may be better, but I sold my cheaper 27" for my current Eizo monitor as I just didn't get on with the finder and other options being very small.
