I’ve been researching the best MacBook for general office work over the past few days because I’m planning to upgrade my laptop. I’ve read through reviews on sites like new york times, tech radar, and even Consumer Reports, and two models keep coming up as top picks:

MacBook Air 15-inch Laptop
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-2025-MacBook-15-inch-Laptop/dp/B0DZDBDCFH

MacBook Air 13-inch Laptop with M4 chip
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-2025-MacBook-13-inch-Laptop/dp/B0DZDC3WW5

However, I’m having a hard time deciding which one would be more suitable for my needs. My work includes multitasking with Office apps (Excel, Word, Outlook), video calls, occasional light photo editing, and a lot of browser-based tools.

Battery life and portability are important to me, but I don’t want to feel performance lags either.

Has anyone used both or have a recommendation based on real-life office use? I'd really appreciate any insights or advice before I make the purchase.

Thanks in advance!

I have used MacBook Pro computers for years, and I bought MacBook Air computers for my wife and my two collegiate children. Zero complaints from anyone.

The two models you’re considering are identical except for screen size and weight. More weight could be a little less portable but it’s still a very light computer. The 16 GB of memory will meet your needs but you might want 512 GB of storage instead of 256 GB, if your budget allows.

They both have extremely good connectivity. I attach mine to a hub which is attached to a 27” 4K monitor, storage, keyboard/mouse and power.

For your needs either model will work fine. The big difference is screen size but that can be mitigated by an external monitor. Which I would recommend anyway as more real estate is good for office applications, and your eyesight.

I would consider perhaps upgrading to a 512GB SSD. Barring that, a fast, and significantly cheaper than Apple, external SSD disc to store your files. It is not only a cheaper solution, but provides portability of the files.

For basic office work: MacBook Air if you want portability. That's really all you need. To make it simple, assuming it's in your budget just pick whether you want a 13 or 15 inch MacBook air and get the newest one.

You have a good consensus here. If you want a definite "I use my MBA for general office-y stuff and it's great", here's mine. My 15" M2 MBA (16GB RAM, 1 TB storage) is the successor to a late-2013 rMBP (which was itself still quite adequate, unfortunately it met with a fatal accident a couple years ago), and it's been great. To be honest, a faster machine would make almost zero difference. The previous machine only had 256GB storage and I could have lived with that; the 1 TB allows me to be sloppy and lazy!

13" vs 15" screen is personal preference. My eyes aren't what they used to be, and the computer isn't carried around all that often, so I got the 15". Others might prioritize differently.

If you have an external monitor most of the time and you plan on traveling a lot, the 13" Air.
If not, the 15" Air.

I've seen most people get the 15" Air for general usage.

Ditto everyone else re Air.

Been using Pros for years now, but next laptop will be an Air as extra ports have not been a real need to me. And in this day and age the processors are more powerful than many people need (or more specifically, me).

As for screen size, my first MBP was a 15" but have not really missed it since going 13" since not that big a difference for me, like the smaller footprint, and can always plug into a bigger monitor if needed, as others have stated.
