Best medium to create a backup to put in storage?

If someone wants to create a backup of their computer and store at another location long-term for safe keeping, what would be the best medium to use? Any disk midium is not large enough. I guess an external HD is the only choice?

How long and how much space is needed? Hard drive prices have gotten so low that they are usually the best choice. The hassles and time required to make multiple DVDs aren't worth it. A 1TB drive is now $60.

For something that small, an external SSD wouldn't be too expensive.
