Due to the virus, I cannot meet with my vocalist currently and am dying to get some stuff recorded. We're really jazzed on this new song that we're passing back and forth, writing together.

She has an iPad and just records into Garage Band using the built in mic. So, as a workaround solution, it occurred to me I can just ship her a microphone. I can produce her over the phone, and have her upload the vocal parts, which I will import into Logic. I've already got the song fleshed out.

Are there any you have heard or tried that you feel would be best for this application? I only need one directional microphone, with a preamp built in. It seems to me it's best if the mic also has its own converter as well though? Perhaps there is a brand that has software that handles all this, that she could record into. Many people seem to recommend the Shure MV88

There is also the iRig 2 hand held Microphone

Lastly, some suggest the Rode VideoMic

Although I'm not sure that is quite as ideal for iPad and Garage Band > Logic.

Thank you in advance for any replies. Much appreciated.

I am sort of leaning toward the iRig 2 mic, so if anyone has any experience with it, especially sound quality, please feel free to share.

It's funny you say that, I bought an Apogee MiC! So I'm glad to read this here today. Thank you.

jamesdean74, the Apogee MiC will arrive today at my vocalist's house. She's a teenager, and I don't know how much patience she will have for tech stuff. Will Garage Band recognize the Apogee mic straightaway, and she'll be able to use it pretty much plug and play?

Yes, GarageBand will recognize it as an audio input on either iOS or macOS. She can quickly learn the controls on the mic itself, the mic has a level control that she can watch while recording and if it starts flashing red she will know it’s clipping and to turn it down. I hope this works out for you guys, over the years I’ve tried quite a few different mics and have been pleased with the apogee, of course it’s not as good as my Neumann, but it’s great for what it is.

Ah! So that's your secret. ; ) U87?

I bet.

Well, yeah, as a solution for now I'm super happy to have found that MiC for 100. bucks used, and have her get to work. What kind of preamp do you pair with your Neumann?

Another question if I may. once she records her vocals, I'm going to want her to export just the vocal track(s) as full size audio files, and send them to me. That's pretty doable right?

I just splurged a few months ago and got the TLM 102, I love it, I have also been using a Shure SM7B. But I like to keep the apogee around.

Will she be using GarageBand on a Mac or iOS device?

At the moment, I run the Neumann straight to a focusrite 4i4, the shure sm7b goes through a cloud lifter then into the 4i4.

Nice. That mic is a beauty. I use RME 802 for my preamps and converters.

She uses a 2020 iPad Air. Is it fairly straightforward for her to export solo vocal tracks for me?

I use GarageBand on my iPad a lot, when she’s done recording she can share the file as either a song file in multiple formats, or as a project, which you can open in GarageBand or probably also logic. $100 is a great price, I hope you’ll be able to achieve what you are looking for!

Ah! The whole project! That's a great idea. Then I can export the vocal tracks myself. So in that folder, Garage Band would have audio files stored much the way Logic does? Or in any event I could export them. That's a damn good idea.

So, perhaps then Google Drive would be the best plan? Like I could have her upload the project to mine.

She could also just choose project and email it to you as well.

With a number of audio tracks, wouldn't that be too large to email?

You’re right, it may be too large to email, from the GarageBand share sheet, and I just checked, you can share the project to google drive, that would probably be your best bet.
