Hi

I would be really grateful for some suggestions as to the best monitors that actually work with the MacBook 12 inch 2017. I have purchased and tried out 2 monitors so far but they have both failed to meet the grade and after seeking protracted solutions with the manufacturers I have decided to give up on both and now have refunds. The two monitors I have tried and reasons for returning them are as follows.

Acer h277hu: purchased direct from acer. Arrived with panel fault, returned for replacement and second monitor had to be returned due to main board issues. Third monitor needed a replacement hdmi port and the new firmware to get the 2017 MacBook to work, however, after 2 months acer told me that the firmware update was no longer working and offered to refund me.

LG ultrafine 4k: would have rather had 27" but was recommended by apple that it would not work with my MacBook 12. Wasn't going to spend as much but was so annoyed after the issue with acer that I figured I would just go for the so called 'best' option. Major display issues intermitendly blacking out on 2 replacement monitors so I gave top with this one too.

Ideally I am looking to spend under £500 and would like a 27" usb - c compatible monitor, however, I will consider other connected monitors.

I have obviously googled and done research that way but due to the issues I have already had I am really keen to hear from some of you who have a MacBook 12 and can tell me which monitor you own that actually works with it.

PS: I did wonder that it was my MacBook that was the issue and not the monitors so I tried other MacBook and MacBook pros but unfortunately the issues were the same.

Thank you in advance.

That is too bad about your luck so far with the monitors you have tried. Those two models that you had were both monitors that I had been thinking about - maybe I will reconsider now.

My current setup is an OWC USB-C hub along with a Dell U2515h 2560x1440p monitor. Everything works perfectly and I feel that this Dell at around $250 is a pretty good deal. Of course it is no $1000 display, but for $250 I find it to be a very nice option. I purchased this after trying out a couple of large screen 4K displays, and was very pleased to keep this 25" 1440p Dell once I gave it a try.

When I purchased my MacBook recently, the idea of having a monitor with built in USB-C power delivery and hub was appealing, but after hearing your situation I might just consider myself not in the market anymore...

Speaking of 2560x1440 monitors... My 2010 iMac 27” works fine as a monitor with my MacBook. However, I use it as a monitor for my new 27” iMac.

However, if I were buying new I’d only get a high dpi monitor. Too bad the LG Ultrafine 4K didn’t work for the OP.

If using a 2560x1440 monitor over USB C, or with a USB C hub first, will you get USB 3 speeds on external drives? I know with the LG 4K display, the built in USB ports only work as USB 2 with the 12" MacBook.

I tried the exact same models and my MacBook 12" 2016 worked with Acer even though the USB non-power did not work. Nothing worked with a MacBook 12" 2017.

I bought the LG 5K 27 and neither laptop worked.

Still looking...

It's a bit out there, but I'm using a Lenovo Thinkvision 27" 1440p monitor that has a USB-C Hub, so it does the charging thing, all via one cable.

Definitely the budget variant, but for like 300 Euros, it's a stupidly good deal.

I'm looking at the following USB Type-C capable 1440p monitors for my MacBook 2016;

BenQ PD2710QC: seems to have great reviews, stand-alone dock, expensive
Dell S2718D: also expensive, glossy I think if you like that
Philips Brilliance 258B6QUEB: much cheaper and I prefer the slightly smaller size but it's hard to find one in store to look at

I think the Dell is the newest so stands the best chance of having fewer issues
