HandBrake and MPEG Streamclip the last time I searched.
Then there is also ffMPEGx and some others.
But .avi to .mov will not work with HandBrake, bur MPEG Streamclip can do that, though you have to set the codec and its settings manually.
Maybe you can tell us what you want to do with the transcoded movies?
