I'd like to start an online family tree website that any member of my family can edit using the web. Are there any good ones out there?

I tried using jot.com but I found it to be too simplistic. It doesn't allow for basic things like birth dates, death dates, and maiden names. I'd also ideally like to be able to export the completed family tree to a GEDCOM file.

Any insight would be great. Thanks!

I looked everywhere for a good solution to no avail. So, I created my own using MediaWiki. Very simple to set up as long as your web host has PHP and MySQL. It allows for any member of the family to edit and upload pictures, bio's etc. Not very user friendly regarding the way I formatted it though (with the numbering and hyperlinks (+) to descendants, etc). It was the best I could do with limited resources.

If you find anything that looks good, please post back here as I am always open for something that will make it easier to update for everyone involved.

There is a site that looks promsing called www.myheritage.com. However, it won't be launched until later this month. I have hopes for it though since it was created by genealogy experts.

The real goal is to create a tree with a nice GUI that is fun and easy to read and edit. I have one at www.tribalpages.com at the moment but its web formatting looks ancient.

This is by far the best solution. It uses gedcom 5.5 files (standard file format for genealogy)

You can edit online and off line. You can clip portions. You can link with other phphgedview installs. It has extensive user management and easy admin interface. It has many different ways of presenting the family tree. It has good privacy features. And it has multimedia support.

Get a web host running php5 and mysql and install this. Upload your gedcom and you will be up and running in minutes.

Hi! The best site that I have found was http://www.kindredkonnections.com

It allows you to build your family tree online for free and then once you get up to 60 people and 15 families, it gives you free access to their research database for one month. They also allow you to "earn" access to their database through extracting documents.
I have been trying to find something a little more user friendly than this, but so far, this is the best I've found!
Hope this helps! :)
