G'day,

God, I had forgotten how heavy this beast is! My Mid 2009 13" 2.26Ghz MacBookPro with 5GB RAM is still going strong, though it's only function now is to serve as a HTPC -- playing Netflix, Plex, and occasional web browsing. I've "unplugged" at the minute cos all of my other devices are being selfishly hogged by my family. *fist shake*

Currently this system is running 10.9.5. Overall I'm fairly happy with how it's running, but for 2 things:

Fail to wake from sleep
The MBP is connected to a TV, and screen kept closed. I have a cheapo Bluetooth Mouse/Keyboard that work via a dongle, and the MBP typically wakes when you click the mouse button / key on the keyboard. However - on occasion this does not work, and indeed nothing will make the machine wake. Opening the screen does not help, not pressing any keys etc on the MBP itself. It will however have a slight hum - maybe HDD? - but the only solution is to hold the power button til it force shuts down, and then turn it back on. This is annoying as it takes forever to restart... It's not a frequent issue - though I feel it's becoming more common.

Firefox / Netflix has died
About a month ago, Netflix ceased to run in Firefox, my preferred browser. It says the WideVineCDM plugin has crashed. I've tried to research this, but didn't get to a solution. I have tried re-installing Firefox, deleting all firefox settings etc... re-installing the Netflix plugin (silver-something?) For now, my only work-around is to use Safari instead - which is working fine. But... not a fan of Safari...

At any rate... this all got me thinking maybe I should try an upgrade of the OS. It's a pretty neglected machine, despite having daily use. But, I don't want to push it too far and slow things down.

What is the latest OS you'd run on this era machine? (And with 5GB of RAM)

(And... if you have any ideas on the above issues - they'd be appreciated! :) )

(And... this keyboard... used to love it, but finding it hard to type on now... seems the keys need a lot more pressure than I'm used to with the extended wired ALU keyboard.)

Cheers and thanks

cosmic

Addendum... About 20 minutes use unpluged, and the battery is on 85%. Lucky it lives plugged in now.

I'd put El Capitan on it -- the last version of the OS it can run.

You can find it here:
El Capitan (Disk Image, direct)

Mount the disk image and run the pkg file.
It will place the installer app inside your applications folder.
