No way I will get one of these crap O2 iPhone contracts.

Want cheap pay as you go.

Must have an Edge all you can eat data add-on.

Good data service, particularly in London.

Ideas? Surely I am not the only one thinking of doing this.

The biggest issue with this method is that of EDGE coverage. Previously, Orange was the only network with EDGE but it's important to remember that this is fairly limited to marginal areas (those that do not have strong 3G coverage). Thus, being in the middle of a city that does have good 3G coverage means that you would be unlikely to pick up EDGE.

So, this leaves o2 and I myself am considering getting a Pay and Go SIM with their new Browsing Bolt-On. This bolt-on currently costs £7.50 per month but should give you the same data allowance as the iPhone plan has (assuming that it will be 200MB p/m).

Of course, you can use any other network on PAYG, but you would be limited to basic GPRS speeds on the £1 per day deals that most of them have. AFAIK, there's no real unlimited data plans for PAYG, so the o2 bolt-on is probably the best you're gonna get... and a lot more manageable than £35p/m.
