I will be adding a Samsung 830 256Gb SSD in my MBP (mid 2009). I will be using the SSD as my boot-up/application drive and the original hard drive as an overflow data drive.

For best performance, does it matter whether the SSD is placed in the original hard drive spot or in the optical bay??????

Yeah, for an 09 I'd definitely put the SSD in the main bay
