Girlfriend has an Iphone 6s Plus that is currently under the NEXT plan, she'll be studying abroad for a year. What would be the best way to unlock her phone? If AT&T's unlock service is out of the question please suggest some reputable vendors.

Yeah, time was Swift Unlocks might have been the suggestion…Very few left out there that can unlock an AT&T phone.
A&T’s lawsuit was filed this week in federal court in Seattle. The carrier names Kyra Evans, Nguyen Lam and Marc Sapatin as former customer call center employees who knowingly installed malware on company computers to give Prashan Vira, who runs Swift Unlocks, remote access to the machines. Vira, and about 50 others who haven’t been identified yet, are then accused of running programs designed to use the employees’ credentials to access the unlock codes.
Usually, AT&T phones are GSM unlocked Globally, just not in the US.
Interesting, good to know. Have not purchased a contracted phone in years. That's false.
AT&T iphones under contract or under payment plan are locked to AT&T and will not work on any other other carrier either domestic or international unless an unlocked is approved.
Yes, they're tough with unlocks at AT&T lately. Before they would approve unlocks way easier.
There's always the swiftunlocks 3rd party IMEI unlock option but I think they charge around $100.
So swiftunlocks is still a good place to unlock?
