Ordered a 256g m4 mini to replace my old iMac and was digging around external SSD reviews. I saw the OWC mini-stack STX which made me curious what was the best practice storage configuration for an everyman mac desktop. What best to put on what storage type (sata? ssd?) and how to mount. Is there any reason to have a sata drive for infrequent large files, backup, time machine etc ? Not trying to be cheap, just practical. If not, maybe the STX is overkill. Only other wish is for a power efficient SSD enclosure. I know some get hot and draw a ton of power even during machine inactivity.

I've got a current hodge hodge of external drives including an old thunderbolt sata enclosure and a few samsung USB SSD's that contain photos/video. My needs are basic home use for this mini. I have ~3TB of various media I plan to use iPhoto. Nothing else too demanding.

My current Thunderbolt Sata drives annoy me as no matter what I put on those drives, the mac seemed to grind to a halt during spin up any time it needed to read anything on them.
