Best Program for creating MPEGS?

What can I use to create short clips (scenes) from DVD's I own; that will convert into MPEGS? Is this something I can do with QT Pro? I don't want screen captures, I want the actual video clip, with sound.

Suggestions?

Thanks, it does! But one question: do I need to convert the whole DVD before I use ffmpeg, or can I just use ffmpeg alone to create clips?
