I am running a headless Mac Mini off of my modem as an Internet gateway, DNS server, mail server, etc.

I am just setting it up now, so I am wondering what is the best software (apart from the very expensive Apple Desktop Remote package) to run this Mini from another desktop? If it is also supported by iPad, that's a plus, but really not important as I find remote desktop software on the iPad to be pretty clunky in general.

I'd prefer to use free software, but not if it means not opting to use something much better that costs a little money.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

OS X has a free built into remote desktop (system pref -> sharing -> remote login I believe)

I also use logmein free

LogMeIn works well and is free.

Access is via your web browser.

However, for better performance on the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, there is an app you can DL. I believe it's $30. Well worth it IMHO.

If you want to manage the mini from within the home network then the built-in screen sharing tools are enough. pick up the free screensharingmenulet as it makes thing even easier.
