I'm trying to help a friend who is extremely sweet and kind to everyone. She has subleased an apartment for the summer and, while internet access was to be included in the sublease, it was turned off by the parent of the girl who was subleasing.

A girl who lives 2 floors down in an adjacent apartment has a signal that can be captured on the balcony right outside her apartment - but it's not strong enough to allow for even a weak connection. Her MacBook Pro can connect to the network, but it struggles to even run http://www.speedtest.net. I'm an idiot and thought digital signals were either on or off, but that is obviously not the case. The most that the connection can do is run a search for "speedtest" and display the results of the search.

I own an Amped Wireless High Power 600mW Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender (REC10) - but it has less power than the NetGear wireless router already in the girl's apartment. Sadly, no antenna can be added to the router already in place. But I do have a larger antenna on the REC10.

I have no idea how any of it actually works - but I desperately need to boost the signal so that it reaches my friend's apartment. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, Essentials Edition (EX2700) is the best seller on Amazon, but that doesn't always mean it's the best product. But I also simply can't afford to spend $200+.

Thanks again. I'm hoping someone who knows about these things might be willing to advise me on the best solution.
