Hello sweet mac community,

How are you all doing? I have a question for you all regarding the seemingly chaotic smart home situation...

So far my smart home consists of Nest thermostats and Nest fire detectors. In the near future I am going to get smart locks for the main doors, and eventually smart lights.

I am curious what your take is on the best brand and home ecosystem to invest in, given the following

-I am an apple user almost exclusively

-I will be using part of my home as an AirBNB, and so it is helpful if I can have a number pad for at least one of my smart locks on the exterior, which is programmable.

-I understand Google is completely incorporating Nest... not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. And once the incorporation is complete, not sure if it will be a better home solution than apple's homekit. Thoughts on this?

Do you have a recommendation?

Seems the contenders are:

August Smart Lock Pro
Yale Assure Lock SL

I was wondering what you all may have experienced with these two? The main difference is the lack of a keypad for the August Lock, but it has the benefit of being a simpler installation. How is homekit compare with google smart home technology? Would I be able to use homekit for both?

Thank you MacRumors community for your fantastic insight!

Richard

You can get a Yale Assure lock Connected by August. It’s basically a Yale Lock with August features using an August Module and a wall plug in bridge. That’s what I use and it’s been great. It also has an AirBNB invite feature within the app. Never used it so I can’t comment on it. If you like the August Pro, you can get a separate Bluetooth keypad for it. I had it at first but it was pretty bulky and not as aesthetically pleasing on the inside of the door as the Yale. I didn’t want a physical key lock as those can be picked. The Yale is not difficult to install. There’s an app called BILT that has a nice walk through video guide of the install. I think if you change the module inside the Yale, you can use it with HomeKit or Google depending on the module.

If you have any specific questions regarding the lock or the app, don’t hesitate...
