What kind of sound are you looking for? What kind of music do you listen to?

mostly hip hop, rock and some top 40 pop...

i just want really good speakers. i like to blast my music while i work and my current JBL speakers are starting to have a muffled "static" sound as they've gotten older... the sound is still OK but I'd like something more pro-sounding.

If you have a good stereo system with good speakers, why not use AirTunes to play music through those speakers, using an AirPort Express? My floor stereo speakers will shake the room, if needed.

For just a bit more...

...you can grab Audioengine A2's:

They are a fantastic set of speakers and you'll see that they generally receive great reviews. I've been using mine for a couple of years now and they are incredibly accurate, versatile and powerful for their size. They play everything from classical, to country, to metal and sound great doing it. Highly recommend.

I've also owned M-audio. For a pair within your budget I don't think you will find a better speaker than the M-audio AV40s.

They can be found online for your price and will not disappoint.

Harman Kardon Soundsticks II, beautifully made, stylish and sound lovely.

Mrdm, do you like audioengine or m-audio better?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I'm a happy owner of a set of Audioengine A5's but I can't say I haven't considered what it would have been like to go down the m-audio route.
