Whats the best surface for my MacBook if I DON'T have a fancy laptop pad or table or cooling device?

Is putting it on a bed the worst possible spot?

Water would be worse than the bed. :D

Seriously though, the bed is a pretty bad place, no ventilation.

Even if you keep the vents clear, your macbook will likely get too hot. Bedding is warm.:)

Metal will dissipate heat a lot better and faster than something like wood.

My MBP and PBG4 work ok on my bed for general web-surfing and iChat. I would think a pillow would be worse because the laptop would sink down. If you wan't to use it on your bed you could put it on a cutting board or something similar.
