I have an old G5 dual 1.8 with 8 gigs of Ram (only 6 shows up lately). What do you think, other than using it as a music/media server for the home (I'd have to get an Airport card for it), is the best use for it - or should I just sell it and get whatever I can get? Space is limited as I live in NYC.

Like I tell everyone who asks this, the G5 is big, uses a lot of power, and generates a lot of heat. I'd sell it and buy a Mini with the proceeds.

If you had a computing need that wasn't being met and you needed another computer to fill you would know that on your own.

Thanks guys. I don't need it.
Now to find someone who does need it

You need 100 posts to place ads in the market place here but you're only 20 away I see in your profile. If you can find 20 different interesting things to say around the forum you can use it. :) More realistically though.. I would use Craigslist.

I guess they want to avoid new members that are only interested in the marketplace so the make the 100 post minimum rule.

You need 250 posts to access the marketplace.

yep, I'm at about 180 posts. I think the whole 250 posts to access the marketplace is a bit extreme, but what do you do? :(

I took the side off of a dead G5 and files down all the posts and screw holes. Now it's a floor height laptop desk. Gf's 15 year old was using it and she liked it

I'd hook it up to your TV and get a wireless game controller and throw in a good graphics card. Emulators ftw. Seriously a g5 dual 1.8ghz and 6gb ram should run even ps2 flawlessly. Also dolphin, the GC/wii emulator runs like a charm on a ppc.

Of course, you'd need an internet connection to download those LEGAL BACKUPS from YOUR MACBOOK PRO. I'd just get a mac usb wifi n card, look on amazon.

If it was not for space constraints, i'd say: Sell the innards (logic board(s), CPU, Ram etc.) as spare parts and build a serious hackintosh into that housing...

Space and power consumption are a consideration, but if I had a tower I'd throw a bunch of hard drives in and make a software RAID backup solution and NAS device out of it.
