Best video editor for my files?

I have a number of .avi and .mp4 clips that I would like to be able to cut/crop and piece together rather simply and maybe add a few simple effects. What would be the best video editor for this? I get the feeling that iMovie is not, considering that it takes forever to convert my files to a format that is usable with iMovie.
