My buddy wants to transfer his Windows XP data to his new Intel iMac. We're talking about an exact clone- Accounts, programs, network settings, desktop screen saver

Which program is the least painless for his type of operation?

Parallels and VMWare Fusion offer that service. You'll be running it in a virtual machine though and not native. Not sure how you migrate a native system.

if it is to run natively he need to create a custom made xp install dvd with all his settings and files. there is ways to make that work fine. just google around a bit

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Google VMWare Converter. You can run it within the existing XP system and create your image to an external drive or network drive.

Dunno if Parallels offers a similar P2V solution, but you should be able to import a VMWare VM.
