I have several old macs that I use as different servers (a 2009 macbook pro, a 2011 mac mini
MD388LL/A 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB L3 cache) as well as a 3 year old synology 1511+.

On the macs I have:
- a plex server (mac mini)
- crashplan (to backup my NAS) (mac mini)
- iTunes server (mini)
- sonar/usenet client (pro)
- a server for alexa/sonos integration (pro)

I'm having issues with the my mac mini staying connected to my NAS. I have leases that don't expire on the router, but it constantly disconnects SOME of the NAS drives that I suspect is due to bugs in crash plan (I tried completely resetting network settings by creating/deleting location and removing preferences, but nothing helped.

So I'm thinking of redoing my entire setup to have virtual machines running specific functions (one for each of above). Ideally I would have them on just one machine (the mac mini) to save power. Is this possible?

Is there a way to run a cluster of mac minos? Maybe something like ESXI 6.0 off an SD card on the mac mini with iSCSI configured between the NAS and mac mini and then have virtual machines for each function? If I can't do it on a mac mini is there a good cost effective server (up to $1000) that may do a better job? I've never tried anything this complex...
