I have been using Intego since 2008. It is getting more “buggy”. It vanished from my dock and I could no longer place it back into the dock. That was the final straw.
Looking for Virus software recommendations for my 2017 iMac.
Thanks.

I was also going to say Malwarebytes free, but only if you encounter an issue.
Sophos Home has received good reviews.
can the software scan multiple accounts on the same computer or do you have to scan each account independently?

WebRoot (if you're not on Catalina). Their current product is having issues installing/working on Catalina -- beta fix to be released hopefully mid-November.
I have used Intego for many years and it works well for me, I do not find it buggy and it works well in the background and does not have noticeable impact on Mac performance.
For me the decision to install an anti virus app is not so much for the risk for security of my Mac, but because for work and other associations I share many files between colleagues who use PCs and I do not want to spread viruses if they have not been so conscientious.
I add my support to the recommendations for Malwarebytes.
Paid version is an automated, full-time scanner. The free version you have to run manually. You pay if you think you need full-time protection. You don't have to pay if you feel you need to just run a scan when you suspect a problem. Is there any advantage to the paid version of Malwarebytes? The cost is not an issue if there was an advantage.
Virus writers are using virus checkers as vectors for attacks these days. You are making your computer more prone to attack if you install these products.

Well he’s full of crap, so it would be hard for him to elaborate.Interesting - can you shed some light / evidence on this?
Maybe I can shed some light crap around.Well he’s full of crap, so it would be hard for him to elaborate.
Norton is and always has been a steaming pile of crap.Maybe I can shed some light crap around.
We (not me specifically, I'm the good guy acting like a bad guy) attack software as well as OS to inject agents. It is much easier to find/exploit software bugs and they often go unpatched for months, sometimes years. Virus protection software is ubiquitous. So we study it, mostly for irony.
We "pentest" all common software: Skype, Zoom, Norton, Facebook Apps, ect.
