I'm back for more newbie questions...

So I was looking at TB enclosures and you buy an m2 stick to put in it. Or complete units.

So is it worth the extra money to go TB over USB SSD?

It almost becomes internal memory if fast enough?

So I would keep sample libraries on it for studio one.

Recommendations and pitfalls?

I also would like to shuttle files back and forth to my windows machine, good methodology?

Thanks. all help appreciated!

I thought I could use a BT keyboard but I can't get it to show up in win10, got it setup for the mac but have to have two keyboard and two mice.

Networking? They're on the same local network...

Anyone doing that without problems.

I took an external USB hard drive and the Mac can read it but can't write to it.

Is that permissions or NTFS problem?

Thanks

Unless you need really fast speed, a regular 1G network for file sharing between Mac and PC may be more ideal. Say you choose the Mac as the primary, the sample files are stored on whatever drive directly attached to this Mac, then you just enable file sharing in System Preferences where you can access this as a network drive on the Windows side. Of course this means the Mac and its files have to be online all the time and preferably on Ethernet.

If you must use a vanilla method of storing these files on an external drive, the way I would do it is to get a really new TB4/USB4 enclosure such as a ACASIS or an ORICO, have a semi-decent NVMe SSD like a SN850 or 980PRO, then format the drive in exFAT since this is the only modern file system supported by both macOS and Windows out of the box. The advantage of this is you get maximum speed on both computers (the Windows side doesn't need Thunderbolt, it uses USB type-C 3.2), but you can only ever use the files on one computer at a time. For audio samples I guess you can make do with a cheap 2.5" USB3.0 drive anyway, but at that performance I would ask why not stick to the network solution above?

Since you seem to intent on having both systems working concurrently in the foreseeable future, if I were you I would invest time and probably money in improving your network infrastructure, like getting a NAS to store these files, and perhaps better ethernet switch or WiFi APs. Relying on vanilla DAS especially between different systems is really not very efficient nowadays.

Yea simple file transfers would be what I need with my current thinking...

I have to read up on sharing.

The mac really runs studio one quick. Might be working more over there.

One thing though, I got the plain jane model so I can't install the plugins I currently use, not enough room.

Both computers sitting side by side with two audio interfaces. I can send midi to the windows machine to sound the voices with the plugins there and the audio sent between the interfaces. The windows sound module.

I got my roli gear working with BT on the mac, making progress.

I'll try some file transfers with a flash drive with ExFat format to try.

Lot of ways to go, Thanks for your help

Thanks, yea I got the demo working, might be all I need, worth $20 not to have to read about networking any more.
