I tried swapping drives from my 2010 MacBook Pro to the 2011 model, but it would not boot. I'm sure it has something to do with the new chips.

Migrating is out as I want to use the same 'short name'.

Cloning has been mentioned, but I can't see how cloning from my 2010 macbook to an external drive will be any different to swapping the drives.

Has anyone tried installing a drive from an older model in the new MacBook pro, then booting from the 2011 Install CD and re-installing OS 10.6?

What do you mean by migrating is out?

Connect the old hard drive to the new Mac and use the Migration Assistant to transfer your old user to the new Mac.
