(I apologize in advance if this is not the right forum to place this thread...I did not see one elsewhere.)

I have always been an iPhone user but have never been "current". (I always buy a family members used one when they upgrade.) I am currently using a 5s but plan on making the jump to the "8" because I love taking pictures and basically just want it as a camera. (Bash away!)

Anyway, what is my best chance of getting through to order on the day that they go on sale? I have heard that going to the store is not wise...and someone mentioned an ap that is better than just going online, but I didn't have a clue what that was about.

Any helpful tips would be appreciated for this newbie...I am going on a couple of trips in October/December and would like to have the 8 with me to take pictures!

1. Use the App
2. have what you want pre-selected ie in the cart/bag/favorite
3. don't add extra items as an afterthought
4. Get Apple care later ( I go to the apple store next day - or at the store if I have it shipped there _)

Idea is to get in Fast and get out fast before overload disconnected you and you have to start all over again.

Have your Cell pin ready too even if a no contract open phone.

Cordorb,
Thank you for the very detailed response. It is appreciated. Could I ask you 2 more questions:
1. What is the AP?
2. I will have to schedule time off from work to do it...will I need to take off the 12th...or do they just announce the date that orders can be placed on that date?

He is telling you to download the Apple Store App from the iTunes App Store. This tends to work better than buying from Apple's website.

I usually set my alarm to wake up a few minutes before the phones go on sale for pre-order. I sit at my desktop computer with my iPhone and iPad, and have the Apple Store App open on my phone, the Apple Website open on my computer, and the Verizon Website open on my iPad. As soon as the ordering pages open up I start placing an order on all three and see which one is able to place the order first, then just close out of the other two without buying.

I used to go to my local Verizon store the morning that they went up for sale. The lines at my store usually weren't too long and I could be within the first 10 or so people just by showing up an hour before they opened. However, starting with the iPhone 6 they started having really limited units available. I was the 4th person in line that morning but that store didn't receive any of the 64GB space grey 6+, so I ended up walking away empty handed. Haven't bothered going to the store in person since.

No reason to take off work on the 12th, that is just the keynote. They will announce during the keynote the date that the phones will go on sale for pre-order, and the date they will be available in store. Online pre-ordering usually starts at Midnight Pacific time on the date they announce, in store depends on what time your local stores open.

Beerstalker,
Thank you for the tips, between you and Cordorb I feel like I know am as prepared as is humanly possible. Once again, thanks for the help...this newbie will now leave you experts alone!

I've bought the new model for the last 2 years (daughters!). I stayed up until midnight on the day they become available, and hit the Apple Store web page. Both times it took me 30-45 minutes of so to complete. Lots of dropped sessions, at different steps along the way. But ultimately it goes through until completion. The App Store app may work better, but this method has worked for me.

The apple store app on your current iPhone works best. For some reason, the app always seems to go live ahead of the website and you can get in. Log in ahead of time and set everything up, including 1 click ordering and Apple Pay. When the time comes, you click the Buy link, scan your fingerprint, and you are done.
