Basically my laptop has a 30GB harddrive, and has 4000 photos on it. Whats the best way to keep the a few of them, probably the most recent 500 or so, to gain more space on the laptops HD and backup all photos to an external harddrive.

--- So that when i re-back up it doesnt replace to 4000 on the external HD with the only 500 on my laptop, essentially deleting what i wanted on the external HD.

Thanks For The Help!

i keep a folder on my external HD for older pictures. when i'm done looking at them or need more HD space, i copy them to the external HD and then delete them from the iPhoto library. of course, i keep them organized by date and subject in subfolders on the external HD, which i'd recommend for finding stuff more easily. it works for me because it's simple.

Why not store all of them on the ext hd?

in my case, i'm on a laptop, so i don't always have my external HD with me. plus there are some picture with which i'm constantly working or e-mailing back and forth.
