Now that it's apparently updated for Retina, I would like to buy Office 2011. I see it is available for students at, for example, Amazon. ~$90.

But can anyone tell me how quickly I will be able to use it? Does not authentication of my student status take some time? Is there a generally fastest way of getting running on a student edition of MS Office?

"Office Mac Home and Student 2011" can be bought by everyone for $90 at Amazon. It's not an educational version. It can be used by everyone directly after buying, downloading and installing it. It comes only with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - if you also want to have Outlook you have to buy the "Home and Business" version for $160.
