would getting a mini display to dvi thhen getting a DVI to hdmi be the best way and do you get sound from this or would i need speakers connected to my MBP.

best way to connect Alu macbook pro to HDTV?

If your TV has VGA then that is probably the best way to go, from what I hear you can't get certain resolutions via HDMI, though if your TV is native 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720 then I would say that HDMI would be the way to go.
My HDTV has the standard Left Right inputs underneath the DVI for computer audio so you just have to get a stereo to line cable for it to get audio via a computer input.
