Best way to connect to work computer remotely?

I have a PowerBook at home and a new Intel iMac at work. I was wondering how I could possibly connect to the iMac from home to work on projects. Does Apple Remote Desktop do this or is it solely for controlling computers on the same LAN?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
 
Any VNC program (including ARD) will work, assuming you have the appropriate router ports forwarded at work.
