I had a hankering to play the original Myst*, which is for PPC and the classic Mac OS. However, I have the DVD version of Myst, and my only remaining PPC machine has a CD drive.

I haven't used the classic OS for a while so I've probably forgotten a few tricks, but what's the 'best' way to get files onto the machine from a more modern system?

So far I've:
  • Put the DVD into my 10.13 machine, imaged it with Disk Utility (as a read-only .dmg image), zipped the image with Archive Utility and then unzipped it on the 8.6 machine with StuffIt Expander 7. This results in an image that Disk Copy 6.3.3 won't mount. I found references to an unreleased Disk Copy 6.4 that can open .dmg files, but it wasn't able to mount the image either. I suspect that the format has changed again since 6.4 was made.
  • I tried zipping the contents of the DVD using Archive Utility and then unzipping at the other end with StuffIt. This killed all the file types and I wasn't able to run the game.
  • I copied all the files to an HFS+ flash drive without any compression, then plugged that drive into my 8.6 system. That 'worked', but the files have lost their icons and I suspect that this has killed the resource forks. While this doesn't seem to matter for Myst, it's possible that it'll cause problems later (or with other apps/games).
Is there a trick here that I've missed?

*Possibly not the best example in this case, since it's possible to run it on a modern machine with some trickery, but my underlying question still stands.

OS9 and back used .img for disk images. .smi would have been a compressed disk image.

I can't think of a way that doesn't involve third party software or filesharing but you don't mention which systems you have.

I forgot to mention that I'd also tried an OS X app called 'DMGConverter' that claimed to convert new-format DMGs to old-format Disk Copy images, but it doesn't seem to work on 10.13.

For Myst itself, the problem is solved (aside from lack of icons) as it seems to work without the resource forks. But I might run into the issue again at some point, and the resource forks may be important in that case.

I wondered about a .cdr image but found a reference to them also not being mountable directly with Disk Copy. Does anyone know whether Toast can mount images? It's been too long since I've used it (and my version, 7, requires OS X anyway so I'd need to dig up an older one).

Some form of file sharing might do the trick, although so far I haven't had any luck there. When trying to connect to my 10.13 machine over AFP, 8.6 complains about an incompatible version (I don't have the exact wording to hand). A quick search indicated that OS 9 would have the same issue (I don't actually own a copy of 9).

Both machines have USB and Ethernet. Neither have FireWire; it's a little too old for that (333 MHz iMac; I think FireWire - and DVD - came with the next model!).

Rename the .cdr to .iso. Use toast to mount the iso.

Toast is great because it doubles as a no cd patch, been playing duke nukem 3D lately this way.

i used a middle mac to transfer files. 1 is my mac pro on 10.11, transfer that to my imac g4 running leopard. then from there i can transfer to my mdd running os 9. or just yesterday i took my firewire external (formatted hfs+ on os 9) and just plugged it into my mac pro. copied over several files without a hitch and plugged it into my mdd and it was read.
