Best way to get an iPhone 4 on July 3-5th?

I'm currently with T-Mobile and my contract won't end until July 4th. I was planning on joining AT&T on July 3-5th, to get an iPhone 4. I'm planning on getting a family plan, 1 iPhone 4, 1 Regular Phone. For most pre-orders that was taken this afternoon its saying July 2nd. I don't want to go to an AT&T store and I'll have to wait weeks for my iPhone to come in, how was it with the iPhone 3GS last year? I'm kind of getting scared, cause I really want an iPhone as soon as my contract ends. If iPhone tends to get out of stock, should I go get pre-approved a week before?
