Best way to get pages to Word?

Apparently my friend has pages 08 on her MB and it doesn't offer an option to save in Word 97 format. Any help?

You should be able to export in Word format... not save in '08
It is a separate option in the drop down menu

Not sure exactly what you mean by this — "Word Document" isn't present in the drop down or the drop down itself isn't there? If it's the latter, you need to switch to the fullsize save box. Screenshots from '09 because it's what I have now, but I remember this being much the same in '08:

the only option is save as both but the Word program at our school cant read that

Try "exporting" the file instead of Save[ing] as. Go to the File menu, click on Export, select Word, then tell it where to save the file.

I believe the problem is Word 97. Try this: Export the file from Pages as a Word document (Pages 08 handles this as an Export, not a Save As). Now open the Word document in TextEdit. From TextEdit, Save As... you will have a choice to save it as a Word 97 document.
