I want to be able to record HD off-air (Freeview), edit in iMovie and then upload the result to YouTube.

Any ideas?

Well... it's of dubious legality to copy and post on uTube.

other than that you need a TV tuner that will convert the input to something the Mac can read. Something like the Elgato devices are what most people use.

The Macs do not have a TV tuner and don't have a way to directly record a video-in.

If you are particularly keen on doing this then something like the Blackmagic Design Intensity boxes might do what you need. If you want to record HD Freeview then you'll need to import content via HDMI, so that rules out the Elgato stuff. I think the Intensity will do what you want but they're not cheap and I can't say for certain that it will work when you are dealing with protected content.
