Best way to run automated task

HI all,

I have just created an automator application mounts all my network drives and then backs up all my files through a bash script but i am just curious about the best way to get it to run on a schedule. I have tried it via cron by setting it to 'open' the application at a specific time and that seemed to work ok. Would this be the best way to go about doing this or should i create a re occurring ical event? I have heard launchd mentioned as well but not to familiar with it.
