Disclaimer: For the purposes of this post, we are ignoring any rumors or stories regarding the impending existence of the iphone. Unless the rumored iphone drops prior to December and/or is impending and proven, I'm not anxious to wait around for it. Thanks.
Disclaimer two: This is a very, very detailed posting, because I have a question about a specific need for XP. Thanks.
Ok. My cingular account is eligible for upgrade come November, and I'm rapidly reaching a point job-wise where it behooves me to carry my contacts and agenda (and the potential to grab email, although I don't need it to be pushed), as well as my normal cell phone. Since I don't need intense pda-capabilities, and I don't intend to pay for the touch-screen pda data plans (twice the smartphone plan), my best bet on cingie is a <gulp> MS Smartphone or Symbian device.
Here's the question:
I can use missing sync to handle most of the sync duties at home, and I have enough admin control on my work computer to handle basic PIM syncs, but they won't let us play with downloaded .exe files. (Big shock, I know.) So now that I've got a brandy-new macbook with intel, I figure any .exe programs that need to be installed on the phone, and (more importantly) any software and stability upgrades can be done via XP on my macbook. So what are my best options to set this up?
I know there's parallels and bootcamp. All things being equal I'd prefer parallels; I only need to use XP for my theoretical smartphone, and I would be using it for outlook and activesync. I don't relish the idea of having to reboot every time I need to access them.
Alternately, is there a program or a way to unpack an .exe without running XP? I'm guessing the answer is no, but I thought maybe...since I won't actually be running the programs, just transfering and installing them elsewhere.
Anyhow, any suggestions on how I might best go about this would be awesome. Sorry for all the detail, I just wanted it to be clear why I needed XP, since it's specific and relates only to 1-2 programs, probably 1-2 times a week.
