It’s looking like i might have to sell my iPhone 14. Having never sold a phone before… what’s the safest way to do this in the UK while also getting the best possible price?

For me, eBay is the way to go. It’s relatively safe due to PayPal intermediating and you will get the best possible price.

If you want the safest method, probably Music Magpie or We Buy Any Phone. You will get a lot less though as they are brutal if you have scratches, chips or imperfections.

I had a perfect 12 Mini and decided to go with eBay and picked up a far higher than normal value for it.

I did think about eBay but I hear (mainly on this forum lol) they they will always side with the buyer in any dispute - so the buyer could say the phone is faulty when it’s not and PayPal will just refund them all the money!

That’s why there is a risk/reward aspect with eBay. It’s unlikely there could be a dispute but it’s possible. CEX are usually okay and if you do the trade in person you can show them the phone is in full working order. They obviously won’t give you the best price though.

Facebook marketplace is also good if you are comfortable with a meet up and cash trade.

I’m a member of AVForums and usually sell my phones there. It’s also good for buying used phones.

I've sold a few phones on eBay with no issues. To minimize buyer fraud, you can limit the type of buyers that are allowed to bid by setting minimum user ratings, etc. when you setup the auction.

Facebook marketplace is where I’ve always sold mine. Cash and face to face with no selling fees. Sold cars and furniture there for years with no issues. Don’t go near eBay unless you want to be scammed and for eBay to take the scammers side when they return a damaged iPhone that wasn’t even the one you’ve sold them. A friend of mine got bitten badly that way and it went on for weeks and weeks trying to sort it out with eBay and PayPal being pretty unhelpful throughout.

Are people generally happy paying ~£600 cash..? That would be my preferred way to do it I think

sellmymobile.com gives best prices if you want to sell without the hassle of dealing with people.

Never seen that site before, good shout. personally I’ve used Music Magpie and eBay. Never had any issues with either, but with eBay you want a higher selling price to account for the percentage eBay take.

This is correct. It can be very painful. If you do go down the eBay route, I recommend you take a short video of you using the product you are selling as proof it work, and extra pictures above those you use for the listing itself. Anything to help protect yourself.

eBay, when the £1 or 80% listings are available, otherwise they'll have you for fees

Gumtree (collection ONLY) and Facebook (again, collection ONLY) can be good as well; but you will have plenty of time-wasters and fraudsters. So keep your wits about you etc
