My iphone 13 pro max 512 gb got pretty badly damaged. The back is smashed and the side is bent, but the screen is not cracked and everything seems to function normally at the moment. However, there is a funny smell so I suspect the battery may be punctured. At the apple store somebody told me I could probably get it repaired for $450, but when I googled it it seems to be $600 for that model.

I'm wondering what the best way to get rid of the phone is. Ideally I would like to sell it and buy a 13 mini. However, if it is basically worthless I would consider getting it repaired as that might be my cheapest option to get a new phone.

I'm just looking for suggestions.

In the mean time, I am honestly happy to be using my old 1st gen SE.

Sounds worthless to me and if not you aren’t getting iPhone Mini money for it. Recycle it through Apple or give it away for free.

If it is worthless and apple can really repair it for $600 or so, then that would be my best option I think.

Why spend $600 (maybe more) on repair, when you can get a brand new 13 mini for about the same price or less?
Well, I figure for $600 I can possibly get a basically brand new iphone 13 pro max 512 gb which costs $1500. And thats a little less than the 128gb mini.

If I could get some $ for it on ebay, and get a new mini while spending less in total, then that would be something I would consider.

If the battery is in fact punctured, that is a safety hazard and definitely not something that should be sold on eBay and shipped in standard mail. There are specific regulations carriers have to abide by when transporting batteries, and I doubt if one of them would be willing to transport a punctured battery from a phone.

A damaged and punctured lithium ion battery could still produce gasses and ignite when off. That’s why you can detect a funny smell. Perhaps you could bring your phone to a cellphone repair shop and sell it to them for a cheap price.
