Best way to set up iMessage with iPhone and MBP

Hi all, question about iMessage-

what's the "best" way of setting up iMessage across your apple devices? Do you connect it all with iCloud or not?

Ive noticed over time iMessage blows up in size with texts, attachments, etc. and this can take up valuable phone and computer storage. I'd like to avoid this/delete older attachments and files to free up space, but also hang on to certain old texts/coversations. I understand if you let iMessage sync with iCloud then messages can delete across all devices?

I think using Messages in iCloud is a good way to go if you want to sync across your devices.
