Best way to sync phone contacts to laptop?

I find that contacts I add in the iPhone are not synced to the laptop whereas contacts added in the laptop's Addressbook ARE synced to the iPhone.

With iCloud in the picture, is there a better way to get them all synced up? It's really frustrating.

Edit: Still on Snow Leopard.
