Having recently bought a 16" MBP, I am now looking for a way to only transfer certain files and application to it from my old Macbook Pro. The old mac has a user account that I'ved used since OSX 10.4 and as a result has a lot of old, useless preferences and applications accumulated on it, stuff I would like to get rid off on the new laptop, including all the non-64bit apps as well.

Migration Assistent seems like a very much all-or-nothing deal, so if anyone has any advice on how to transfer some data and apps to a "fresh" install, please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

Turn on file sharing and copy what you want manually. Another option is to do the same with an external hard drive or flash drive. Alternatively, delete everything you don't want. Then run migration assistant.
