Now i have the new photos app up and running on Mac i no longer need iPhoto, what is the best/correct way to completely remove iPhoto and the iPhoto library from my Mac? I thought as photos is supposed to be a replacement for iPhoto apple would explain the best way to go about this but i don't see it in the photos help file anywhere.

I suspect a lot of people are going to look at the size of their Photos library, then decide they better delete their iPhoto or Aperture library to make more room. DON'T. The photos haven't moved, as discussed in the above article.

You can just delete iPhoto from your dock, and probably even delete the app, but don't touch the library!

According to Serenity Caldwell (in the comments to the page below), the support page is poorly worded, and it is safe to delete the iPhoto Library.

That said, I have not tried it yet myself.

I think the actual meaning of that page is to say "everything has moved to your new Photos library, and the old iPhoto is just a shell of it's former self, but it points to the new library if you still want to view it. It takes up so little room now, though, that why bother...and you may want it later for some reason.

I think it would be one of the stupidest things ever to actually keep the original copies in the old iPhoto library, instead of moving them to the Photos library and then creating links in iPhoto. Apple does some pretty dumb things, but surely not that...

Just waiting for the rest of my photos to upload to iCloud then I think I will delete the iPhoto library and see. From what I have been reading online it should be ok to do so as you suggest.

Thanks for the link by the way.

I will report back once done.

Yeah...

BE SURE YOU BACK UP BEFORE DELETING YOUR ENTIRE IPHOTO LIBRARY.

Not saying you'll have any problems (I did not), but...
