Best way to unlock an iphone 3g?

A friend gave me a 16gb iphone 3g today. It just needs a replacement LCD (shows white only, no water damage). The repair will be no problem for me, but I was just wondering what my options are for unlocking this phone. Its still on IOS 2.2.1 , never jailbroken, no SHSH ever saved.

I know I could google it, and I have, but there a lot of outdated guides showing up.
