Ok, so I recently got iPhoto '11 after upgrading from iPhoto '07 that came with my macbook.

I spent hours upon hours going through all of the identified faces in my iPhoto library (several thousand). I noticed that the feature that is supposed to recognize who the person is wasn't really working very well, even after over 100 photos of that person had been added. Sure it would get it right sometimes, probably 20% right, 30% wrong, and 50% didn't even try to guess. Is it always this poor?

My explination for this bad success rate is how I actually tagged nearly every instance of a person. Meaning even if the face was looking to the side, or sideways, or really zoomed in and blurry, or partially blocked, etc. I mean there were some pics that were blurry enough, blocked enough, etc. where I didn't tag, but most I did. I mean the purpose for tagging is so you can look at all the pictures you have of that person right? Not to only use the perfect pictures so iPhoto can recognize them immediately.

So does every partially blocked face, every blurry instance, every face turned to the side, every wacky picture with them wearing something on their face, etc etc actually make the recognition software more and more confused?

For example: Say I have 5 good pics of Bob and a pic where
Bob is turned sideways, and a pic where Bob is wearing a zoro mask. I tag 4 of the good ones and the 5th one is instantly recognizes as Bob. But now imagine I ALSO tagged the 2 abnormal pictures of Bob. Will iphoto still recognize him or will it try to find the similarities/merge all the 6 tagged pics resulting is something that looks nothing like Bob??

I wish there were two ways to tag a face. A "yes this is my friend Bob right here in this pic" (useful to find more pics of bob) and a "yes this is Bob and this is a good pic of his face. Please use this data to try to recognize Bob in more pics in the future"

Does this make sense or am I delusional? :p
